Review of "Wayne's World"
Of all the phrases that have entered the moviegoing lexicon, “Schwing!” might be the most childish, inane comment that a character could speak. The word, accompanied by a thrusting up of the midsection, is said when an attractive woman appears on screen. It is a word that thoroughly begs for the utterer to be slapped.
Before you think that I have gone full fuddy-duddy, though, that is entirely the point, ofWayne’s World, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, based on the ubiquitous Saturday Night Live sketches. The sketches are at their best when they winkingly satirize an aspect of popular culture that is “not cool.” Myers and Carvey, in the show and the movie, invite the viewer to go along with the gentle mockery.
And we do.
