Billy shifted in the front seat of Tommy Wayne’s truck and glanced surreptitiously at the driver. Tommy Wayne, fingers curled around the steering wheel, jaw clenched, exhaled softly.
I don’t know, something’s different. Like he’s psyching himself up for something. Terry’s okay… right? Or is that the change?
Billy balled his hands into fists, so tight that his fingernails cut into his palms, as they pulled onto the highway. His leg bounced in time with some pounding rock song on the radio. The moonlight, distorted by the pine trees along the roadside, plunged Tommy Wayne’s face into shadow. His jaw was working on some long-shredded piece of gum, like an engine’s pistons firing too fast.
About forty miles in, Billy’s cell phone shook, making him jump.
Don’t know the number. Jade?
Coolly, he glanced at Tommy Wayne.
Billy looked back down at the screen.
